A high-throughput method to characterize the gut bacteria growth upon engineered nanomaterial treatment

We developed a DNA-based quantification (DBQ) method in a 96-well plate format. The applicability of this method for several types of ENMs was proved in both pure bacterial culture and in vitro human gut microbiome community.

Mixture effects of drinking water disinfection by-products: implications for risk assessment

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water have been associated with increased cancer risk but effects of known DBPs cannot explain the mixture effects of disinfected water samples.

Application of in vitro bioassays for water quality monitoring in three drinking water treatment plants using different treatment processes including biological treatment, nanofiltration and ozonation coupled with disinfection

In vitro bioassays indicative of different modes of action demonstrate the high quality of produced drinking water.

Evaluation of reverse osmosis drinking water treatment of riverbank filtrate using bioanalytical tools and non-target screening

Organic micropollutants that occurred in a natural drinking water source induced effects that were not detectable after reverse osmosis. Bioactive compounds were characterised by non-target screening of LC-HRMS data using open cheminformatics approaches.

Effects of ozone and produced hydroxyl radicals on the transformation of graphene oxide in aqueous media

The hydroxyl radicals and ozone play different roles in ozonation of GO.

Photolysis of graphene oxide in the presence of nitrate: implications for graphene oxide integrity in water and wastewater treatment

As the nitrate concentration increases, the dominant pathway of GO transformation changes from direct photolysis to indirect photolysis enhanced by the production of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) during UV irradiation of nitrate.

Emerging investigator series: effect-based characterization of mixtures of environmental pollutants in diverse sediments

Our study distinguishes the total vs. the bioavailable contamination of mixtures of environmental pollutants in sediments from contaminated sites in Europe and more remote locations in Australia and the Arctic.

Facet-dependent generation of superoxide radical anions by ZnO nanomaterials under simulated solar light

The capability of ZnO nanomaterials to generate reactive oxygen species under solar light, which is critical for their photocatalytic applications and may affect their environmental implications, can be substantially influenced by exposed facets.

Solid-phase extraction as sample preparation of water samples for cell-based and other in vitro bioassays

Effect recovery for bioassays was evaluated and was similar to recovery by chemical analysis for the studied SPE methods, providing support of bioassay use for water quality monitoring.

Application of cell-based bioassays to evaluate treatment efficacy of conventional and intensified treatment wetlands

Removal efficacy of treatment wetlands was assessed using a comprehensive bioassay test battery, with intensified wetlands found to remove 74–100% of biological activity.
