Catalytic 1,2-dihydronaphthalene and E-aryl-diene synthesis via CoIII–Carbene radical and o-quinodimethane intermediates

Catalytic synthesis of substituted 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes via metalloradical activation of o-styryl N-tosyl hydrazones is presented. Substrates with an alkyl substituent on the allylic position reacted to form E-aryl-dienes rather than the expected 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes.

Influence of axle length on the rate and mechanism of shuttling in rigid H-shaped [2]rotaxanes

Shuttling rates for neutral and charged [2]rotaxanes with rigid axles varying in lengths from 7.4 to 20.3 Å were found to be independent of the length of the axle, except when the distance was short enough to allow the ring to interact with both recognition sites which provided a short-cut mechanism that significantly lowered the energy barrier.

Multi-component hybrid hydrogels – understanding the extent of orthogonal assembly and its impact on controlled release

This paper reports self-assembled multi-component hybrid hydrogels including a range of nanoscale systems and characterizes the extent to which each component maintains its own unique functionality, demonstrating that multi-functionality can be achieved by simply mixing carefully-chosen constituents.

Reversible mechanical protection: building a 3D “suit” around a T-shaped benzimidazole axle

A benzimidazole molecule can be protected from deprotonation with strong base by converting into a suit[1]ane – a type of 3D mechanically interlocked molecule. Utilising a combination of ring-closing and ring-opening metathesis, the wearing of the protective “suit” can be made reversible.

White-light emission from discrete heterometallic lanthanide-directed self-assembled complexes in solution

Herein, we have developed a white-light-emitting system based on the formation of discrete lanthanide-based self-assembled complexes using a newly-designed ligand. We demonstrate that fine tuning of the lanthanide ions molar ratio in the self-assemblies combined with the intrinsic blue fluorescence of the ligand allows for the successful emission of pure white light with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.34).
