Optical detection of pH changes in artificial sweat using near-infrared fluorescent nanomaterials

Photoluminescent single-walled carbon nanotubes are versatile tools for the development of optical nanosensors. Carbon nanotubes were employed for the optical detection of pH within a biologically relevant range in a model biofluid.

Chloro aluminum phthalocyanine-based organic thin-film transistors as cannabinoid sensors: engineering the thin film response

Cl-AlPc-based OTFTs can be used as low-cost, point-of-source cannabinoid sensors. Through device performance and film characterization, the film thickness and device geometry has been optimized for both solution and vapor THC samples.

Rapid and direct quantification of the SARS-CoV-2 virus with an ultrasensitive nanobody-based photonic nanosensor

Intercalating methylene blue in molecular beacon for sensitive detection of salivary TNF-α towards early diagnosis of oral cancer

An electrochemical molecular beacon-based biosensor is developed for the sensitive detection of TNF-α, which presents a non-invasive strategy for salivary cytokines detection towards the early diagnosis of oral cancer in a point-of-care fashion.

Comparing two cortisol aptamers for label-free fluorescent and colorimetric biosensors

A comparison between two truncated DNA aptamers reported to bind with cortisol was performed and binding was observed only for one of them. Two label-free sensing methods were studied including cortisol/gold nanoparticle interactions critical for colorimetric sensing.

About this collection

To celebrate one year since the first issue of Sensors & Diagnostics, this collection highlights some of the very best work, carefully chosen by our dedicated editorial team and world-renowned editorial board members.

We are entering the first full year of Sensors and Diagnostics and are happy to share with you some of the achievements made by different research teams around the globe. The research papers selected cover five fascinating areas representative for the sensing and diagnostic field. They include bioreceptor considerations via cortisol aptamers, electrochemical molecular beacons for sensitive detection of salivary TNF-α for oral cancer diagnostics as well as a nanobody-based photonic nanosensor for vial sensing. The focus on near-infrared fluorescent nanomaterials as optical pH probes as well as the construction of organic thin-film transistors as cannabinoid sensors underlines the importance of materials aspects of the sensing field.  

Three Critical Reviews have found in addition wider interest by readers and have been included in the 2022 Editor’s Choice collection to understand better the advances made beyond the state of the art in the last year and to provide a road map for the months to come.
