Overcoming double-step CO2 adsorption and minimizing water co-adsorption in bulky diamine-appended variants of Mg2(dobpdc)
Judicious choice of framework structure allows for single CO2 adsorption steps with bulky primary, secondary diamines appended to metal–organic frameworks.
Supramolecular catalyst functions in catalytic amount: cucurbituril accelerates the photodimerization of Brooker’s merocyanine
As low as 1% content of a supramolecular catalyst, cucurbituril, is sufficient to accomplish the photodimerization of Brooker’s merocyanine within 10 minutes.
Catalytic 1,2-dihydronaphthalene and E-aryl-diene synthesis via CoIII–Carbene radical and o-quinodimethane intermediates
Catalytic synthesis of substituted 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes via metalloradical activation of o-styryl N-tosyl hydrazones is presented. Substrates with an alkyl substituent on the allylic position reacted to form E-aryl-dienes rather than the expected 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes.
Effective stabilization of a planar phosphorus(III) center embedded in a porphyrin-based fused aromatic skeleton
Planar phosphorus(III) centers were effectively stabilized by structural constraint as well as aromatic stabilization in porphyrin-based fused π-conjugated frameworks.
Influence of axle length on the rate and mechanism of shuttling in rigid H-shaped rotaxanes
Shuttling rates for neutral and charged rotaxanes with rigid axles varying in lengths from 7.4 to 20.3 Å were found to be independent of the length of the axle, except when the distance was short enough to allow the ring to interact with both recognition sites which provided a short-cut mechanism that significantly lowered the energy barrier.
Spatially-resolved soft materials for controlled release – hybrid hydrogels combining a robust photo-activated polymer gel with an interactive supramolecular gel
Self-supporting photo-patterned hybrid gels achieve controlled directional release depending on their surrounding environment.
Multi-component hybrid hydrogels – understanding the extent of orthogonal assembly and its impact on controlled release
This paper reports self-assembled multi-component hybrid hydrogels including a range of nanoscale systems and characterizes the extent to which each component maintains its own unique functionality, demonstrating that multi-functionality can be achieved by simply mixing carefully-chosen constituents.
A complementary pair of enantioselective switchable organocatalysts
A pair of enantioselective switchable bifunctional catalysts are shown to promote a range of conjugate addition reactions in up to 95 : 5 e.r. and 95% conversion.
Multi-functional bis(alkynyl)gold(III) N⁁C complexes with distinct mechanochromic luminescence and electroluminescence properties
A new class of highly luminescent bis(alkynyl)gold(III) N⁁C complexes has been utilized as emissive materials in OLEDs and exhibits mechanochromic behaviors.
Porphyrinoid rotaxanes: building a mechanical picket fence
We demonstrate that the threaded macrocycles in interlocked porphyrin–corrole conjugates provide a mechanical “picket fence” without affecting their electronic properties.
Impact of mechanical bonding on the redox-switching of tetrathiafulvalene in crown ether–ammonium rotaxanes
Switchable crown ether–ammonium rotaxanes with a redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) unit implemented in their wheels were synthesised and fully characterised.
Inside information on xenon adsorption in porous organic cages by NMR
In-depth experimental and computational 129Xe NMR analysis of extraordinarily efficient adsorption of xenon in a porous organic cage.
Discrimination of supramolecular chirality using a protein nanopore
Transmembrane protein nanopores are shown to be capable of discriminating the supramolecular chirality of cage complexes at the single-molecule level.
Highly effective ammonia removal in a series of Brønsted acidic porous polymers: investigation of chemical and structural variations
Efficient removal of ammonia from air is demonstrated in a series of Brønsted acidic porous polymers under dry and humid conditions. The impact of acidic group strength and their spatial distribution on the ammonia uptake is investigated systematically.
Structural characterization of framework–gas interactions in the metal–organic framework Co2(dobdc) by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction
In situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments enable the direct observation of weak metal–gas interactions in a metal–organic framework.
Enantioselective carbohydrate recognition by synthetic lectins in water
These chiral “synthetic lectins” are the first to discriminate between carbohydrate enantiomers, and also show unprecedented affinities for monosaccharide substrates.
Reversible mechanical protection: building a 3D “suit” around a T-shaped benzimidazole axle
A benzimidazole molecule can be protected from deprotonation with strong base by converting into a suitane – a type of 3D mechanically interlocked molecule. Utilising a combination of ring-closing and ring-opening metathesis, the wearing of the protective “suit” can be made reversible.
White-light emission from discrete heterometallic lanthanide-directed self-assembled complexes in solution
Herein, we have developed a white-light-emitting system based on the formation of discrete lanthanide-based self-assembled complexes using a newly-designed ligand. We demonstrate that fine tuning of the lanthanide ions molar ratio in the self-assemblies combined with the intrinsic blue fluorescence of the ligand allows for the successful emission of pure white light with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.34).
Template-directed synthesis of linear porphyrin oligomers: classical, Vernier and mutual Vernier
We demonstrate a variety of template-directed strategies for preparing linear monodisperse butadiyne-linked porphyrin oligomers by Glaser–Hay coupling, based on the coordination of pyridine-substituted nickel(II) porphyrins to zinc(II) porphyrins.
Highly planar diarylamine-fused porphyrins and their remarkably stable radical cations
Oxidative fusion of a meso-phenoxazino Ni(II) porphyrin at high temperature gave a doubly phenoxazine-fused porphyrin as a highly planar diarylamine-fused porphyrin. One-electron oxidation of the corresponding β,β-dichlorinated compound gave a remarkably stable radical cation.
Perylene bisimide hydrogels and lyotropic liquid crystals with temperature-responsive color change
Tuning of the temperature response of perylene bisimide hydrogels exhibiting LCST behavior has been achieved by social self-assembly in water.
About this collection
We are delighted to present this web collection which contains selected contributions from the ISMSC/ISACS meeting held in Cambridge, UK in July 2017. Delegates from countries around the world gathered to hear from leading researchers in this exciting field and now we have the opportunity to share with you exciting new research from a number of our plenary speakers and scientific committee members. We hope you enjoy the collection.
Articles in this themed collection will be added below as soon as possible after they are published.
Please return to this page frequently to see the collection grow.
