From insulator to semiconductor: effect of host–guest interactions on charge transport in M-MOF-74 metal–organic frameworks

Here, we report an air-free approach to infiltrate isostructural metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), M-MOF-74 (M = Cu, Mn, Zn, Mg), with conjugated acceptor 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ).

A p-type semi-conducting copper(I)-1,3-benzenedithiolate 2D coordination polymer with high Seebeck coefficient

Linker installation transformations in a 2-D rare earth MOF: increase of the dimensionality and turn on of the temperature sensing capability

A new 2-D 8-connected rare earth (RE) MOF based on a hexanuclear (RE3+)6 SBU, the increase of the dimensionality through SCSC linker installation reactions and the turn-on of the temperature sensing capability upon these reactions are reported.

Spin-state dependent pressure responsiveness of Fe(II)-based triazolate metal–organic frameworks

We applied Fe(II)-based MOFs with different spin-states to investigate the impact of Fe(II) spin-state on the bulk modulus. The results emphasize the complex parameter space that determines the mechanical properties of MOFs.

Benchmarking nitrous oxide adsorption and activation in metal–organic frameworks bearing coordinatively unsaturated metal centers

Several MOFs are evaluated as adsorbents of anthropogenic N2O emissions, the third most abundant greenhouse gas, through complimentary experimental and DFT analysis. N2O activation in M2(dobdc) MOFs is also studied.

Methyl red based metal–organic frameworks for the selective and tuneable sensing of ammonia gas

This work examines a family of UiO-based MOFs built from terephthalic acid and a methyl red linker. The orange-red MOFs show a colourimetric response, changing to dark red with acid vapour, and yellow with base (ammonia) vapour.

Computational insights into the interaction of water with the UiO-66 metal–organic framework and its functionalized derivatives

UiO-66 small tetrahedral pores host the preferential water adsorption sites. Hydrophilic functional groups boost the affinity of the octahedral pores for water, explaining the higher water uptake of functionalized UiO-66 at low relative humidity.

About this collection

In this themed collection, “Fundamentals and Applications of Functional Framework Materials”, Journal of Materials Chemistry C brings together original research articles in the field of framework chemistry, i.e., metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks COFs, porous coordination polymers (PCPs), and so forth. The issue intends to span multiple length scales and disciplines, on topics ranging from their synthesis, characterization, structure-function relationships, insights gleaned from simulation, and application in devices. This collection in Journal of Materials Chemistry C is guest edited by Artur Ciesielski (Université de Strasbourg, France), Christopher Hendon (University of Oregon, USA), and Katherine Mirica (Dartmouth University, USA).
