Emerging investigator series: dual role of organic matter in the anaerobic degradation of triclosan
Organic matter affects the degradation of triclosan as both a sequester and an electron shuttle.
Source contributions and potential source regions of size-resolved water-soluble organic carbon measured at an urban site over one year
A year-long measurement of size-resolved WSOC was made at an urban site to elucidate sources of size resolved WSOC. Droplet mode WSOC was primarily the result of atmospheric processing during the long range transport of biogenic and anthropogenic pollutants from the eastern regions of China.

This study investigated the multiple processes at the coastal plume zone by water quality characteristics and dissolved organic matter optical properties.
Effects of dissolved organic matter on phototransformation rates and dioxin products of triclosan and 2′-HO-BDE-28 in estuarine water
The effects of DOM on the photolytic kinetics and dioxin yields of representative HO-PXDEs in estuarine water are revealed.
Chemical controls on abiotic and biotic release of geogenic arsenic from Pleistocene aquifer sediments to groundwater
Co-cycling of arsenic, manganese, iron, and dissolved organic carbon govern the extent and mode of geogenic arsenic mobilization into groundwater.
Selectivity of solid phase extraction of freshwater dissolved organic matter and its effect on ultrahigh resolution mass spectra
Solid phase extracts of freshwater dissolved organic matter are compared to the original sample with use of complementary techniques.
Mitigation in the toxicity of graphene oxide nanosheets towards Escherichia coli in the presence of humic acid
Humic acid mitigated the toxicity of graphene oxide nanosheets towards Escherichia coli via a physical barrier and weakening the oxidative stress.
Phototransformation of pesticides in prairie potholes: effect of dissolved organic matter in triplet-induced oxidation
Despite the fact that triplet excited state dissolved organic matter (DOM) enhances phototransformation of pesticides by acting as a photosensitizer, it may also decrease the overall phototransformation rate through various mechanisms.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was characterised in water samples sampled in the Lower Kinabatangan River Catchment, Sabah, Malaysia between October 2009 and May 2010.
Size distribution and sources of humic-like substances in particulate matter at an urban site during winter
The highest contribution of HULIS-C to WSOC was observed to be in the particle size bins of 0.55–1.0 μm and 1.8–3.1 μm during non-Asian dust (NAD, 45 ± 6%) and Asian dust (AD, 44 ± 7%) periods, respectively. HULIS exhibited a uni-modal (@0.55 μm) distribution during the NAD and a bimodal distribution (@0.32 and 1.8 μm) during AD, respectively.
Effects of pH and dissolved oxygen on the photodegradation of 17α-ethynylestradiol in dissolved humic acid solution

About this collection
Natural organic matter (NOM) is a complex mixture of organic compounds which undergo further biotic and abiotic transformations in various environmental matrices. It is an important nutrient source for the microbial community, and serves as a major reservoir of carbon in the global carbon cycle; however, due to the complexity and diversity of its components understanding NOM is challenging.
Here, we have collated a selection of research articles and reviews which showcase the ongoing research on the topic of NOM – we hope you enjoy reading these papers!
