Submillimetre absorption of non-polar liquids

Abstract

Fourier spectrometry has been used to obtain the far infra-red absorption spectra of a number of non-polar liquids : CCl4, CS2, cyclo-C5H10, cyclo-C6H12, C6H6, 1,4-C6H8O2, [CH2Cl2,] and some mixtures. The spectra all show a broad absorption band in the submillimetre region. The effects of temperature and of dilution on this band have been studied, and some mechanisms that could lead to the observed band intensity have been considered. It is concluded that the submillimetre absorption in non-polar liquids could arise from a bimolecular collisional mechanism.
