An auxiliary electrode mediated membrane-free redox electrochemical cell for energy storage

Abstract

A membrane-free redox cell utilizing auxiliary electrodes for electrochemical energy storage is proposed. The anode and cathode chambers are connected through a metal wire with redox active materials at the ends, unlike ion-conducting membranes in conventional flow batteries, which switch the oxidation states during charge–discharge cycles.
