Coumarin-based ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals

Abstract

We report the first coumarin-introduced liquid crystalline molecules that exhibit the ferroelectric nematic (NF) and related polar nematic (NX) phases. Distinct from normal nitro, cyano, and fluorine groups, we examine 6- and 7-substituted coumarins as polar electron-withdrawing building blocks. The 6-substituted coumarin is useful for the NF and NX phases.
