A novel trimethyl pyrrocorphin has been synthesized from 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) by the combination of the enzymes ALA dehydratase, porphobilinogen deaminase, uro'gen III synthase, and uro'gen III methylase, leading to a new concept for the synthesis of intermediates of vitamin B12 biosynthesis.
