Nitrogen dioxide reacts with phenylethenes to yield several products [PhCHO, PhCOCN, PhCO2H, PhCH![[double bond, length as m-dash]](https://www.rsc.org/images/entities/char_e001.gif)
CHNO2, PhCOCH2NO2, PhCH(OH)CH2NO2] that can be explained by radical addition of two NO2 molecules; the relevance of these reactions to the formation of nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the environment is discussed.
