A series of novel 6-spiro-epoxypenicillins prepared by the reaction of diazopenicillanates with oxalyl halides followed by various nucleophiles is reported; these compounds exhibit notable β-lactamase inhibitory and antibacterial properties dependent on the substituents and stereochemistry of the epoxide.
