Effect of temperature on the response characteristics of ion-selective electrodes based on solid silver salts applied to electrically conductive epoxy supports

Abstract

Results of a study of temperature effects on the response of ion-selective electrodes with membranes made with Ag2S and Ag2S-AgX (X = halide) mixtures applied to silver- or copper-loaded epoxy supports (and commercial electrodes of different types, studied in parallel for comparison purposes) are presented. Isothermal measurements were made in the temperature range 10–60 °C and included calibrations at different temperatures (for evaluation of operational temperature ranges, slope and standard potential variations and isopotential points), the determination of stabilisation times at different temperatures and hysteresis curves. Ag2S-AgX (X = halide) electrodes show a more dispersed behaviour than Ag2S electrodes. The nature of the support material and the internal support-sensor contact rather than the solubility and compactness of the sensor seem to determine the properties of the electrodes.
