The solvent effect on the α-effect

Abstract

The reaction of p-nitrophenyl acetate with butane-2,3-dione monoximate anion as the α-nucleophile, compared with p-chlorophenoxide ion as the normal nucleophile, exhibits a maximum in rate enhancement (‘α-effect’) in dimethyl sulphoxide–water mixtures as the medium composition is varied.
