Activation of CO2-like molecules by a multifunctional complex: possible pathways leading to C–C bond formation involving functional groups simulating CO2

Abstract

The bifunctional complex [Co(salen)Na(thf)][salen =N,N′-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato) dianion, thf = tetrahydrofuran] promoted the reductive coupling of methyl pyruvate, while diphenylketen added to the salen ligand surrounding the cobalt ion to produce a complex which can be the precursor for ligand-assisted C–C bond formation involving CO2-like molecules.
