Electromotive force studies of dilute aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid + methyl-substituted ammonium chloride mixtures at 25°C

Abstract

Measurements are reported with the cell H2, Pt|HCl(aq)m1, MClm2|Ag, AgCl with M = MeNH+3, Me2NH+2, Me3NH+ at 25°C and total ionic strength 0.100 00 mol kg–1. The results are interpreted in terms of specific interaction of ions of unlike charge and specific interaction coefficients, BM,Cl, are derived for the various methylammonium chlorides. There is a steady decrease in the activity coefficient as methyl groups are introduced into the ammonium cation.
