Hydrogen bonding in 3,4-disubstituted 5-hydroxyfuran-2(5H)-ones

Abstract

An abnormally strong self-association of 3,4-disubstituted 5-hydroxyfuran-2(5H)-ones in solution has been observed. All measurements reveal that in these compounds dimeric association is dominant. The association constants have been determined over the temperature range 23–55 °C, from which the enthalpies, –ΔH0, and entropies, –ΔS0, have been calculated.
