Optically active co-ordination compounds. Part XXXII. Potassium (+)tris-[L-cysteinesulphinato(2–)-SN]cobaltate(III): a versatile agent for resolution of 3+ species

Abstract

The yellow anion (+)tris(L-cysu)cobaltate(III)[cysu = cysteinesulphinato(2–)-SN], easily obtained in a rapid stereoselective synthesis from L-cysteine, is a very convenient and powerful resolving agent for 3+ cations [M(L)3]3+[particularly where L = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2′-bipyridyl (bipy)]. The complexes [Rh(phen)3]3+, [Rh(bipy)3]3+, and [Rh(phen)2(NH3)2]3+ have been resolved for the first time and samples or the complexes [Co(en)2(phen)]3+ and [Co(en)2(bipy)]3+(en = ethylenediamine) obtained with higher optical activities than those previously known.
