Aniline complexes of ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) halides

Abstract

The preparations, i.r. and electronic spectra, and magnetic susceptibilities of the ruthenium(III) complexes A[RuX₄-(aniline)₂](A = Cs, Me₄N, C₆H₅NH₃ or C₅H₆N, and X = Cl, Br, or I); and of the ruthenium(II) complexes [RuL₆]Br₂ and RuL₄Br₂(L = a substituted aniline) are reported. From their spectroscopic properties the compounds containing co-ordinated halide are assigned trans-structures. Values of 10Dq obtained from the spectra of [RuL₆]Br₂ place substituted anilines between ethylenediamine and water in the spectrochemical series. A compound [C₆H₅NH₃]₅[Ru₃Br₁₄] has been partly characterised.
