Nitratopentacarbonylrhenium(I)

Abstract

The reaction between decacarbonyldirhenium and liquid dinitrogen tetroxide yields nitratopentacarbonylrhenium-(I), Re(CO)5NO3. The i.r., Raman, electronic and mass spectra, thermal stability, cryoscopic molecular weight, magnetic, and X-ray powder data are discussed and related to the structure of the compound. Cotton–Kraihanzel (C–K) CO stretching force constants are calculated for the series of compounds Re(CO)5X (where X = Me, Cl, Br, I, or NO3) and related to the σ and π effects of the substituents X. A mechanism for the reaction of Re2(CO)10 with N2O4 is suggested.
