The structure of 2′-methyl-4′-nitroazobenzene-2-sulphenyl halides

Abstract

2′-Methyl-4′-nitroazobenzene-2-sulphenyl bromide, chloride, iodide, perchlorate, thiocyanate, and cyanide are prepared in an analogous manner to the 2′-demethyl compounds. The u.v. and visible spectra of the sulphenyl derivatives in polar and non-polar solvents are presented. Whereas the demethyl compounds show no R band in ethanol but do show an R band in chloroform or benzene, the new compounds show an R band in ethanol but no R band in chloroform or benzene.
