Ionization potentials, electron affinities and screening constants. Part 6.—Comparison with other work

Abstract

The ionization-energies of isoelectronic atoms have been interpreted in terms of a newly-defined set of “screening-constants”, of which some other applications have been given.5 Such ionization-energies have independently been discussed by other authors2–4 using wave-mechanical perturbation theory; an improved empirical equation has also been proposed.6 Here the close agreement of these three independent approaches is displayed, some inadequacies discussed, and a proposal made for using the perturbation-calculations to improve the calculation of “screening-constants”, hence improving their applications.
