Heterofullerenes in which carbon atoms of the fullerene cage are substituted by heteroatoms (boron and/or nitrogen) were synthesized by high-temperature laser ablation of or B4C– or BC2N–graphite composite rods. The products were analyzed with a laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometer (LDIMS), revealing that BC59 (m/z 719) from B4C-graphite under argon atmosphere and BNC58 (m/z 721) from BC2N–graphite under argon or from B4C–graphite under nitrogen were formed together with the C60 molecule. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed the presence of boron and nitrogen in the product by laser ablation of B4C–graphite under nitrogen. Isotope labeled experiments using 15N2 supported the existence BNC58.
