Synthesis of heterofullerenes by laser ablation

Abstract

Heterofullerenes in which carbon atoms of the fullerene cage are substituted by heteroatoms (boron and/or nitrogen) were synthesized by high-temperature laser ablation of or B 4 C– or BC 2 N–graphite composite rods. The products were analyzed with a laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometer (LDIMS), revealing that BC 59 (m/z 719) from B 4 C-graphite under argon atmosphere and BNC 58 (m/z 721) from BC 2 N–graphite under argon or from B 4 C–graphite under nitrogen were formed together with the C 60 molecule. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed the presence of boron and nitrogen in the product by laser ablation of B 4 C–graphite under nitrogen. Isotope labeled experiments using 15 N 2 supported the existence BNC 58 .
