Reaction of the cluster [Ru5C(CO)15] 1 with the bidentate nitrogen heterocycles 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2′-bipyridyl (bipy) in the presence of 1.1 and 2.2 molar equivalents of Me3NO led to a facile metal–metal bond cleavage and a structural change in the cluster to yield the bridged butterfly products [Ru5C(CO)14(phen)] and [Ru5C(CO)14(bipy)] respectively as the major products, and the orthometallated derivatives [Ru5(µ-H)C(CO)13(C12H7N 2)] and [Ru5(µ-H)C(CO)13(C10H7N 2)] as the minor product as revealed by spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
