Reaction of [Ru5C(CO)15] and [Ru6C(CO)17] with 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2′-bipyridyl

Abstract

Reaction of the cluster [Ru 5 C(CO) 15 ] 1 with the bidentate nitrogen heterocycles 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2′-bipyridyl (bipy) in the presence of 1.1 and 2.2 molar equivalents of Me 3 NO led to a facile metal–metal bond cleavage and a structural change in the cluster to yield the bridged butterfly products [Ru 5 C(CO) 14 (phen)] and [Ru 5 C(CO) 14 (bipy)] respectively as the major products, and the orthometallated derivatives [Ru 5 (µ-H)C(CO) 13 (C 12 H 7 N 2 )] and [Ru 5 (µ-H)C(CO) 13 (C 10 H 7 N 2 )] as the minor product as revealed by spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
