Determination of trace levels of halides as copper halides by molecular emission cavity analysis

Abstract

Optimum conditions for the rapid qualitative and quantitative determination of trace levels of halides as copper halides by molecular emission cavity analysis with a plain copper cavity are presented. A light green emission was observed for CuCl at 532 nm, an intense blue emission for CuBr at 494 nm and a deep green emission for Cul at 510 nm. Resolution of mixtures of the halides is feasible using an optimised nitrogen-air-hydrogen flame. Linear calibration graphs were obtained for trace concentrations of halides over the ranges 3 × 10–3–1 × 10–2M Cl, 1 × 10–3-6 × 10–3M Br and 1 × 10–3–3 × 10–2M l, respectively.
