Spectroscopic evidence for the formation of catecholato-FeIII and semiquinonato-FeII pyridine complexes in the oxygenation of catechol by a pyridineiron(III) complex

Abstract

300 MHz 1H N.m.r. and Mössbauer spectra of the solutions preapred by mixing catechol and iron(III) chloride in pyridine indicated clearly the formation of catecholato-FeIII and semiquinonato-FeII pyridine complexes in equilibrium, suggesting the probability of oxygenation of catechol via the latter.
