Reactions of terminal acetylenes with the ‘raft’ cluster [Os6(CO)20(MeCN)]; X-ray crystal structures of [Os6(CO)20{C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)Ph}] and [Os5(CO)15{C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)Ph}]

Abstract

The ‘raft’ cluster [Os6(CO)20(MeCN)] reacts with the terminal alkyne HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR (R = Me, Ph) to afford the organo-cluster [Os6(CO)20{C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)R}], which, on standing, loses the elements of an Os(CO)5 fragment to give the pentanuclear cluster [Os5(CO)15{C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)R}]; the structures of the phenyl derivatives of these hexa- and penta-nuclear clusters have been established by X-ray analysis.
