Kinetics of the oxidation of hydrazine by periodate
Abstract
Hydrazine is quantitatively oxidized to nitrogen by periodate in a weakly acidic solution. The kinetics of the reaction were followed by measuring the volume of nitrogen evolved, and by determination of iodine and iodide concentration. The experimental curves were quantitatively described by taking into account five component reactions: periodate–hydrazine, iodate–hydrazine, iodine–hydrazine, periodate–iodide, and iodate–iodide. The kinetics of these component reactions are known in the literature. To improve the agreement between measured and calculated curves the calculation was corrected for the loss of iodine due to nitrogen evolution.
