Mechanism of catalase action

Abstract

Extensions of the peroxidatic mechanism of catalase action are discussed. Schemes involving a ternary catalase–biperoxy complex are found to be at variance with the experimental results. Energetic and kinetic data are in agreement with a mechanism in which two monoperoxy complexes are formed consecutively. The relationship to other iron-containing catalytic systems for the decomposition of H2O2 is discussed.
