An anomalous product in the photolysis of benzophenone in acidified methanol

Abstract

Benzophenone when irradiated in a 2% solution of hydrochloric acid in methanol, gave methyl benzoate as the only isolable product, whereas in neutral methanol, benzopinacol and 1,1-diphenylethane-1,2-diol were formed.
