Activity coefficients of silver nitrate in nitrate salts

Abstract

E.m.f. measurements have been used to determine the activity coefficients of silver nitrate in six alkali nitrate melts with allowances for corrosion at low silver(I) concentrations and for liquid junction potentials which were estimated from conductance data. Four of the systems showed positive deviations from Raoult's law, potassium nitrate showed negative deviations and sodium nitrate + potassium nitrate eutectic showed almost ideal behaviour. The work constant W in cal mol–1 had the following values at 350°C for silver nitrate in the various solvents : LiNO3, 948; NaNO3, 755; KNO3, –653; (Li,Na)NO3, 762; (Li,K)NO3, 707; (Na, K)NO3, 95. W varied with temperature.
