Oxidation of tetraphenylborate by hexachloroiridate(IV)

Abstract

The reaction, BPh4+ 2IrCl62–+ H2O → Ph2BOH + Ph2+ 2IrCl63–+ H+, has been shown to occur quantitatively in aqueous solution; the kinetics are interpreted in terms of a mechanism involving BPh4˙ radicals which are also proposed as intermediates in certain electrochemical and photochemical reactions of BPh4.
