Metal complexes as indicators for solvent structure. Part III. Nickel(II) complexes of meso-stilbenediamine in mixtures of water with some glycol ethers and with poly(ethylene oxide)
Abstract
Changes in the equilibrium between the blue and the yellow forms of bis-meso-(stilbenediamine) nickel(II) acetate (Lifschitz's salt) are related to the nature of mixtures of water with glycol ethers and with poly(ethylene oxide). The solvation of the organic component by water is discussed qualitatively in thermodynamic terms with respect to the hydration of hydrocarbons and related molecules. The results are also discussed in the light of past experience with Lifschitz's salt as an indicator for solvent behaviour in mixed aqueous solvents.
