A synthesis of o-formylbenzyltriphenylphosphonium chloride from o-formylbenzoic acid is described. Wittig reaction of the phosphonium salt gave 1,2 : 5,6-dibenzocyclo-octatetraene (26.3%) and Staab's tribenzo[12]-annulene (0.41%).
