The nitration of biphenylene with nitric acid in acetic anhydride gives 3-acetoxy-8-nitrobenzocyclo-octatetraene as the principal product. Addition reactions of biphenylene with nitrosyl chloride and formate lead to analogous products. Some facile rearrangement reactions of these compounds are described.
