Co-ordination compounds of organotin halides with 4,4′-bipyridyl

Abstract

It is shown that 4,4′-bipyridyl forms stable 1 : 1 adducts with organotin halides of the types RnSnX4–n where n= 1,2, or 3; with stannic chloride a 2 : 1 complex is formed. 4-Phenylpyridine gives a 2 : 1 adduct with dibutyltin dichloride and a 1 : 1 adduct with triphenyltin chloride. The infrared spectra of the compounds have been measured and the Sn–Cl and Sn–Ph bands assigned. The structures of the adducts are discussed.
