Momentum transfer and vibrational cross-sections in non-polar gases

Abstract

Electron drift velocities have been measured in methane, deuteromethane, silane and deuterosilane at 293°K and for 0.06 ⩽E/P⩽ 24 V cm–1 torr–1. In conjunction with previously determined diffusion coefficients, a numerical solution of the Boltzmann transport equation is applied to derive momentum transfer and inelastic cross-sections in methane and silane, the inelastic threshold occurring at the energy of the lowest vibrational mode.
