Iron(III)–copper(II) and manganese(III)–copper(II) promoted cyclizations: a new stereoselective approach towards α-methyl substituted penicillin derivatives

Abstract

The stereoselective synthesis of α-methyl substituted penicillin by FeIII–CuII and MnIII–CuII promoted cyclizations and its relationship with the Baldwin's INPS (isopenicillin N synthase) mechanistic hypothesis on the biosynthesis of penicillin is described.
