Synthesis and spontaneous self-assembly of non-planar aromatic amide macrocycles

Abstract

We report here the self-assembly behavior of a series of nonplanar phenanthroline-based macrocycles bearing polyaromatic bridges. Even without any directional noncovalent interaction, they undergo spontaneous self-assembly and produce well-defined nanostructures. The detailed spectroscopic, microscopic, and computational calculations revealed their self-assembly property in solution and the solid state.
