A chain of five chromium(II) atoms: a desired compound with an undesired, unsurprising, but important structure

Abstract

Reaction of the dilithium salt of tripyridyldiamine, Li2tpda, and CrCl2 in THF gave the pentachromium compound Cr5(tpda)4Cl2·CH2Cl2 in which the metal atoms were arranged in a linear fashion with localized quadruple bonds Cr[quadruple bond, length as m-dash]Cr  · · · Cr[quadruple bond, length as m-dash]Cr · · · Cr.
