A novel route to butatrienylidene complexes: stabilisation of :C[double bond, length half m-dash]C[double bond, length half m-dash]C[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2 on Ru5 clusters

Abstract

Addition of C2(SiMe3)2 to [Ru55-C2)(µ-PPh2)2(µ-SMe)2(CO)11]1 affords an isomeric mixture of [Ru54-CCCCH(SiMe3)}(µ-PPh2)2(µ-SMe)(µ3-SMe)(CO)10]2, alkaline hydrolysis of which gives the first stable butatrienylidene complex [Ru54-CCCCH2)(µ-PPh2)2(µ-SMe)(µ3-SMe)(CO)10]3; carbonylation of 3 affords produces the spiked-rhomboidal pentanuclear complex [Ru55-CCCCH2)(µ-PPh2)2(µ-SMe)2(CO)11]4; the X-ray structures of 3 and 4 are reported.
