The optically active (5R)-5-indolylmethylpyrrolidin-2-one (5) has been prepared from N-benzyloxycarbonyltryptophan methyl ester (7), and incorporated into a total synthesis of cytochalasin G (3), using an intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction to assemble the cytochalasin skeleton.
