Reactivity of alkenes at a diruthenium centre: carbon–carbon bond formation via HF elimination

Abstract

N.m.r. spectra and X-ray diffraction indicate the presence of intramolecular H ⋯ F hydrogen bonding between the methylene and alkene ligands in the complexes [Ru2(CO)(CF2[double bond, length half m-dash]CFR)(µ-CH2)(µ-CO)(η-C5H5)2](R = F or CF3); methylene–alkene combination occurs via HF elimination under mild conditions, giving [Ru2(CO)(µ-CHCFCFR)(µ-CO)(η-C5H5)2].
