Reaction of [Pt4H2(PBut3)4] with strong acid affords the cationic hydrido clusters [Pt4H2(PBut3)4]2+ and [Pt4H(PBut3)4]+, both of which react rapidly with H2 to give the heptahydrido cluster [Pt4H7(PBut3)4]+ shown by X-ray crystallography to have a ‘butterfly’ core of platinum atoms.
