Charge-induced change of rearrangement mechanism in the barbaralyl system

Abstract

The 9-vinyl-(3c) and 9-aryl-9-barbaralyl cations (3d) and (3e) have been studied by 1H and 13C n.m.r. spectroscopy and found to be in the charge range where the change from the Cope to the divinylcyclopropylmethyl cation mechanism takes place for degenerate rearrangements in the barbaralyl system.
