Kinetic study of the reaction between carbon dioxide and primary amines
Abstract
The kinetics of the reactions between carbon dioxide and a series of primary amines, both in aqueous solution, have been studied at temperatures between 5 and 30 °C. In all cases the reactions were found to be overall second order, first order in CO2 and amine. A Brønsted relationship was found to exist between the second-order rate constants and the acid dissociation constants of the amines. At 20 °C. log10k= 0.34 pKa+ 0.45. The mechanism of reactions between carbon dioxide and amines is discussed.
