Diphenylacetylene as a variable electron donor: syntheses and X-ray crystal structures of [Co(C2Ph2)(MeCN)(PMe3)3]BPh4 and [Co(C2Ph2)(PMe3)3]BPh4

Abstract

Two cationic cobalt(I) complexes were prepared as their BPh4-salts by the reaction of diphenylacetylene with CoBr(PMe3)3 in the presence of NaBPh4; diphenylacetylene behaves as a 2-electron donor in [Co(C2Ph2)(MeCN)(PMe3)3]BPh4 isolated from acetone–acetonitrile mixtures, but as a 4-electron donor in [Co(C2Ph2)(PMe3)3]BPh4 obtained from acetone.
