Relaxation of NO(ν= 1) by radical species
Abstract
A laser-induced infrared fluorescence method has been used to study the vibrational relaxation of NO by Cl, Br, NO2 and O2 at (297 ± 3) K. NO(v= 1) was excited indirectly by vibrational–vibrational energy transfer from HCl(v= 1), these molecules having been prepared using the output from a pulsed HCl chemical laser. The rate constants for relaxation by Cl, Br, NO2 and O2 are (3.5 ± 0.5)× 10–11, (2.0 ± 0.15)+ 10–11, (1.85± 0.4)× 10–11 and (2.9 ± 0.5)× 10–14 cm3 molecule–1 s–1, respectively. These results are discussed in terms of a mechanism involving the formation of collision complexes.
